The Republic of Altai

o_nas_3.jpg
The Republic of Altai is situated in the heart of Asia at the junction of the Siberian taiga, the Kazakh steppe and the semi-deserts of Mongolia. This is a mountainous land with an extremely picturesque landscape, the “Russian Tibet” in the centre of Eurasia, at the junction of several countries, natural zones and cultural worlds.

The state border of the Russian Federation with China and Mongolia and Kazakhstan passes through the Republic of Altai. The Republic has an administrative border with parts of the Russian Federation such as the Republic of Tyva and Khakasia, the Altai Territory and the Kemerovo Region.

The climate in the Republic of Altai is moderately continental with a relatively short summer (June to August) and long (November to March), cold and, in some places, very frosty winter.

Average annual temperatures ranges from +1°С to -6.7°С. In January, temperatures range from -9.2°С to -31°С. In July, temperatures range from +11°С to +30°С. Average annual precipitation ranges from 100 to 1,000 mm.

Mountainous terrain prevails. The Republic is entirely locked within the Russian part of the Altai mountain system (the Mountainous Altai). The terrain features high ridges divided by deep and narrow river valleys and sparse, wide intermountain basins.

The highest mountain, Belukha (4,506 m), is the highest point in Siberia.
